ST. LOUIS (AP) -- Strong safety Toby Wright, who was limited to only three games last season after recovering from a knee injury, was released Wednesday by the St. Louis Rams. Wright, 28, spent five seasons with the Rams but never fully recovered from arthroscopic surgery last October to fix torn ligaments in his left knee.

Coach Dick Vermeil said the development of Billy Jenkins at the safety position and the off-season addition of Devin Bush made Wright expendable.

"Toby has been a solid player for the Rams since before the team came to St. Louis," Vermeil said. "This was not an easy decision."

Wright's best season was 1995, when he started 16 games, posting career highs with 126 tackles and six interceptions. He had only 21 tackles and one sack last season.
