49ers sign QB Stenstrom Posted: Friday July 02, 1999 04:32 PM
SANTA CLARA, Calif. (Ticker) -- After playing for Bill Walsh at Stanford, quarterback Steve Stenstrom will reunite with his former coach in the NFL. The San Francisco 49ers on Friday signed Stenstrom to a two-year contract. Financial terms were not disclosed. Walsh, who was hired as 49ers' general manager last January, was seeking a quarterback to compete for the backup job behind Steve Young. Ty Detmer, last year's backup, was traded to Cleveland and third-stringer Jim Druckenmiller is awaiting trial after being charged with rape in April. Walsh signed CFL quarterback Jeff Garcia in February, but was looking for a quarterback with NFL experience familiar with the West Coast offense. Stenstrom was schooled by Walsh at Stanford from 1992 to 1994 and became the school's all-time passing leader with 10,531 yards. Originally a fourth-round pick of Kansas City in 1995, Stenstrom missed most of training camp due to a contract dispute and was claimed off waivers by the Chicago Bears. After attempting just 18 passes in his first three years with the Bears, Stenstrom started six games last year when Erik Kramer suffered knee and shoulder injuries which required surgery. Stenstrom completed 112 of 196 passes for 1,252 yards and four touchdowns with six interceptions.
