Heavy hit to the wallet Chargers safety Harrison fined $15,000 for rough hitsPosted: Wednesday September 01, 1999 10:27 PM
SAN DIEGO (AP) -- San Diego Chargers safety Rodney Harrison was fined $15,000 by the NFL on Wednesday for hitting St. Louis Rams receiver Isaac Bruce with his helmet twice on Friday. However, Harrison was not fined for the hit on which Rams quarterback Trent Green suffered a season-ending knee injury in the exhibition game at St. Louis. That play was carefully reviewed, an NFL spokeswoman said, and officials determined there was no violation of rules because Harrison was coming off a block and therefore did not have an unrestricted path to the quarterback. Harrison, who has been fined by the league in the past, said the fine wouldn't change the way he plays. "If it did I might as well throw my uniform in and go home," he said. In 1997, Harrison was fined $10,000 for a hit on Kansas City's Andre Rison and also for taunting the receiver. He also was fined $10,000 for a hit on San Francisco tight end Brent Jones, but appealed and had it rescinded.
