CINCINNATI (AP) -- Cincinnati quarterback Jeff Blake injured his passing shoulder late in the first half Sunday when he was hit by San Diego linebacker Junior Seau.

Blake fumbled on a pass attempt and linebacker Gerald Dixon returned the ball 27 yards for a touchdown that put the Chargers ahead of the Bengals 28-7.

Blake left the field and was taken for X-rays on his right shoulder. Rookie Akili Smith took over for the final series of the half.

Seau broke through the middle of the line on a blitz and hit Blake as he started his throwing motion. Blake landed hard on his right shoulder and grabbed his arm as soon as Seau rolled off of him.

Without Blake, the Bengals are left with two rookie quarterbacks -- Smith, who missed virtually all of training camp, and Scott Covington, a seventh-round draft pick.
