Mirer benched; Lucas makes start Posted: Sunday October 17, 1999 04:20 PM
EAST RUTHERFORD, N.J. (AP) -- Rick Mirer was benched as New York Jets quarterback Sunday by coach Bill Parcells, with Ray Lucas making his first NFL start. Parcells hinted during the week he might make a change at the position, which has been in flux since Vinny Testaverde tore his Achilles' tendon in the season opener. Mirer, who was acquired Aug. 20 from Green Bay, was slow to learn the offense and was coming off a weak performance last Monday night against Jacksonville. He was demoted to third string, behind punter Tom Tupa, for the game with Indianapolis. Lucas, in his third NFL season, generally has played on special teams. He received about half of the snaps in practice during the week. Lucas has appeared in nine games at quarterback for the Jets, but only sporadically. He has not played quarterback this year. Mirer, a former Seahawk, set rookie records of 274 completions and 2,833 passing yards in 1993 with Seattle. But the former Notre Dame star has seen his NFL career go downhill, failing to impress in stops at Chicago and Green Bay after Seattle decided to unload him.
