NEW YORK (AP) -- Denver linebacker Bill Romanowski has been fined $10,000 by the NFL for an illegal hit to the head of Kansas City's Tony Gonzalez during the Broncos' game Dec. 5 against the Chiefs.
The fine, which was originally reported Saturday on CBS' "NFL Today," was confirmed by the league.
It was the second time this season that Romanowski has been fined for an illegal hit on Gonzalez and the third time overall, bringing fines against him to $27,500.
"He doesn't care," Gonzalez said Saturday after catching two touchdown passes in the Chiefs' 35-19 victory over Pittsburgh. "I asked him on the field, 'Now you're just gong to get fined. Why'd you do that?' He said, 'I don't care. I've got a lot of money.'"
Gonzalez said he was glad to see the league take action.
"It's fine with me. It is gratifying to see it. You do something illegal like that, you should pay for it. Now he's paying for it."
Romanowski was assessed a $10,000 fine for a helmet-first shot to Tampa Bay quarterback Trent Dilfer on Sept. 26, and $7,500 for the linebacker's hit a week earlier on Gonzalez.
During the 1997 season, Romanowski compiled $27,500 worth of fines -- $20,000 for a helmet-to-helmet hit that broke the jaw of former Carolina quarterback Kerry Collins, and a $7,500 fine for spitting on San Francisco wide receiver J.J. Stokes.
Broncos spokesman Jim Saccomano said he did not know whether Romanowski planned to appeal the fine.
