CHARLOTTE (AP) -- Lab technicians swabbed inside Rae Carruth's mouth to help determine whether the former Carolina Panthers wide receiver is the father of the infant delivered by the woman he is accused of killing.
Lab technicians went to the Mecklenburg County Jail on Monday to perform the procedure on Carruth, who is charged with first-degree murder in the drive-by shooting death of Cherica Adams.
They later performed a similar procedure on 6-week-old Chancellor Lee Adams, who remains at Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte after being delivered prematurely when Ms. Adams was shot in her car Nov. 16.
A similar swabbing had been taken by the medical examiner from the mouth of Ms. Adams, who died Dec. 14.
Lab technicians will analyze the cells collected from the swabs to determine if Chancellor has the same genes as Carruth. Saundra Adams, the shooting victim's mother, received temporary custody of Chancellor at a hearing last week.
Mecklenburg County District Judge Yvonne Evans put off a decision on awarding permanent custody to Saundra Adams pending the results of a paternity test. Evans scheduled another hearing on the matter Thursday.
Charlotte attorney Frank Porter, who represents Cherica Adams' father and stepmother, said Evans hopes the paternity test results are available at Thursday's hearing.
The hearing also will revisit a temporary restraining order freezing Carruth's property and accounts. Cherica Adams' family is seeking child support from Carruth.
During last week's custody hearing, Carruth pledged to provide for Chancellor as he fights the murder charge. He said he would pay for the paternity test, which cost about $1,000.
Carruth and three other men are charged in the slaying. Prosecutors have accused Carruth of instigating a plot to murder Ms. Adams. They plan to seek the death penalty against Carruth.
