GLENDALE, Colo. (AP) -- Denver Broncos safety Darrius Johnson faces a misdemeanor assault charge after being accused of striking a topless dancer.
Johnson, 27, was arrested Sunday night after allegedly hitting the dancer on the side of the face at Shotgun Willie's nightclub in Glendale, an incorporated city surrounded by Denver.
Johnson and the dancer were arguing before he hit her, police Lt. John Gallagher said. The two had reportedly met at a party several months ago, he said.
Johnson was taken to the Glendale Police Department and released with a summons. He is scheduled to be arraigned Feb. 14.
Johnson's Missouri-based agent, Harold Lewis, would not comment. But the Broncos released a statement, saying they are investigating the allegations.
"The Denver Broncos take code-of-conduct issues involving all employees very seriously," the statement said. "Beyond all appropriate civil handlings, we will address this matter internally."
Johnson's arrest was his second in 17 months. He was arrested on a drunken driving charge during training camp in Greeley on July 28, 1998.
Denver's fourth-round draft pick in 1996, Johnson has made two starts at safety this season and four in his career. He has been used mainly on special teams.
