FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (AP) -- Miami running back Cecil Collins was formally charged with one count of burglary Monday in the break-in last month of a neighbor's apartment.
Collins, 23, allegedly broke into the apartment of Tina Nolte, 28, a married woman he had met in the complex's gym and tried to date.
He is charged with burglary of a dwelling in a stealthy manner, a second-degree felony, said Ron Ishoy, a spokesman for the state attorney's office. If convicted, Collins faces 15 years in prison.
He allegedly entered Mrs. Nolte's bedroom in the early hours of Nov. 16 and awakened her husband, Ronald, who chased him from the apartment.
Collins was arrested a short time later at a nearby apartment he shares with his pregnant girlfriend and their 3-year-old daughter. He was suspended indefinitely by the Dolphins. The rookie had been sidelined since breaking a leg Nov. 14 against the Buffalo Bills.
Last week, Davie police said they were looking into allegations that Collins harassed and stalked two more women.
Collins is in a Broward County jail awaiting extradition to Louisiana for a probation violation. In Louisiana, he was charged twice in 1998 with unauthorized entry at his apartment complex in Baton Rouge. Both cases involved female residents, including a 17-year-old who accused Collins of exposing himself and rubbing against her.
Fred Haddad, Collins' attorney, wants to keep his client in Florida.
The charge of violating probation could land Collins in prison for as many as four years.
Collins signed an agreement to be extradited when he was placed on probation. The waiver was ruled valid by Broward Circuit Judge Dale Ross Dec. 22.
A determination on where Collins will end up must be made by Friday.
