GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- Now former Kansas City coach Marty Schottenheimer has made the list of Packer coaching candidates that keeps growing, then shrinking, then growing again.
Green Bay general manager Ron Wolf acknowledged from Palo Alto, Calif., that the Packers contacted Schottenheimer about the vacancy created by the firing of Ray Rhodes, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported for Saturday's edition.
"Who wouldn't want to investigate Marty Schottenheimer?" Wolf said in a statement released in Green Bay. "He has been a very, very successful coach. This is an extensive search. I've said that we're going to proceed slowly. We're going to check every angle."
That news came a day after Schottenheimer, who resigned as Chiefs coach in January 1999, said he wasn't interested in talking to Wolf. The Chiefs have said any team interested in talking to Schottenheimer has to work out a plan for compensation should he be hired, since his contract extends through 2000.
Seattle Seahawks offensive coordinator Mike Sherman is another of the latest possible candidates being mentioned for the Green Bay job, as is Virginia Tech coach Frank Beamer is another -- but he says he's not interested.
Wolf received permission to interview Sherman but an interview date was not immediately scheduled, a Seattle spokesman told The Post-Crescent of Appleton.
Sherman was on the Green Bay staff from 1997-98 as tight ends coach and assistant offensive line coach. He followed former Green Bay head coach Mike Holmgren to Seattle last January.
Sherman, 45, just finished his first season as an NFL offensive coordinator, but with Holmgren calling the plays.
Sherman was Texas A&M's offensive coordinator for one year before he joined the Green Bay staff.
The Milwaukee Journal Sentinel reported Friday that Wolf talked at length with Beamer about the Packers head coaching position.
A statement released Friday by Virginia Tech officials had Beamer saying that, "there is no indication that Green Bay has a strong interest in me. ...
"I am honored that my name has been mentioned with a great organization like the Packers but at this time I do not have an interest in professional football. I plan to stay and continue to build the football program at Virginia Tech."
Wolf has also received permission to talk to San Francisco 49ers offensive coordinator Marty Mornhinweg and former New England Patriots defensive coordinator Steve Sidwell.
But Sidwell was named the Seahawks coordinator Wednesday.
