ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Kansas City Chiefs running back Bam Morris informed the team today that he intends to retire from the NFL immediately.

Chiefs president Carl Peterson announced Saturday that Morris and his agent contacted the team, but gave no other details of his future plans.

The 6-1, 235-pound running back played in 12 games for the Chiefs during the 1999 season, rushing for 414 yards and three touchdowns on 120 carries. He also played for Kansas City in the 1998 season, totalling 481 rushing yards and eight touchdowns on 129 carries.

Morris was a third-round draft pick of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the 1991 NFL Draft, and he also played for the Baltimore Ravens and Chicago Bears during his six-year NFL career.

He also missed two seasons during the prime of his career for violating terms of his probation on a 1996 drug-possession charge. Morris spent 89 days in jail in his home state of Texas from January, 1998 to April, 1998 on marijuana possession.

He finished his career with 974 carries for 3,809 yards and 35 touchdowns.
