JACKSON, Tenn. (AP) -- Carolina Panthers reserve running back Fred Lane was freed on bail Thursday after his arrest on drug and weapons charges in the town where he attended college, police said.

Jackson police said Lane was arrested Thursday, shortly after midnight, when officers found him with 1.3 grams of marijuana and a .22-caliber rifle.

Lane, who attended Lane College in Jackson, was charged with possession of a deadly weapon and possession of marijuana. He posted $1,000 bail Thursday morning and left jail. He is scheduled to appear in court March 2.

A telephone call to Lane's agent, Kyle Rote Jr., was not immediately returned. The Panthers had no comment.

Panthers owner Jerry Richardson was very disappointed to learn of Lane's arrest, a team spokesman said. The club declined further comment on the matter.

The arrest of Lane, 24, a third-year NFL player who saw limited action this past season, comes less than two months after Rae Carruth, the Panthers' top 1997 draft pick, was charged with killing his pregnant girlfriend.

Carruth is being held without bond in Charlotte, N.C., while he awaits trial.

Federal agents arrested Carruth in December after they found him hiding in the trunk of a car in a motel parking lot in Wildersville, about 30 miles southwest of Jackson.

Jackson Police Chief Richard Staples said Lane and three others were arrested after undercover narcotics officers noticed suspicious behavior.

Staples said the officers were passing Lane's Mercedes when three of the men got out of the car and opened the trunk.

The officers returned and found the rifle in the trunk, Staples said. A search turned up the marijuana on Lane and about 4 grams of marijuana on Bryant Lamar Peoples, 24, of Charlotte, N.C.

Howard Burns Jr. and Rodney Simmons, both 24 of Jackson, were also arrested on weapons charges.

"Had they not stopped and got out, they probably never would have been approached by the officers," Staples said.

Originally from Franklin, Tenn., Lane signed as a free agent with Carolina in 1997.
