MIAMI (AP) -- Former Pittsburgh Steelers director of football operations Tom Donahoe turned down a job as personnel director for the Miami Dolphins, saying Friday that he wants to spend more time with his family.

"At this time I have decided to temporarily step back from the NFL and spend some quality time together with my family. We wish Dave [Wannstedt] and the Dolphins great success," Donahoe, 53, said in a statement released by the Dolphins.

Donahoe worked the past 11 seasons for the Steelers. He left the team last month and was asked to take the No. 2 spot in Miami's football operations after Wannstedt succeeded Jimmy Johnson as Dolphins coach.

"I understand Tom's feelings, and I appreciate his strong consideration of our offer. We would have liked to have Tom join the Dolphins, but with the major changes in his career that have taken place over the past few weeks, I certainly respect his decision to step back temporarily to spend more time with his family," Wannstedt said.
