FORT LAUDERDALE, Fla. (Ticker) -- Future Hall of Fame quarterback Dan Marino reportedly will void the final two years of his contract with the Miami Dolphins. But he will play only for the Dolphins if he decides to return next season.

After the most difficult season of his 17-year career, Marino will help the Dolphins clear room under the salary cap, the Sun-Sentinel of Fort Lauderdale is reporting in its Thursday editions.

Citing unidentified sources, the newspaper said the move is being done with the understanding that Marino will sign a new contract with Miami if he decides to play next season. The 38-year-old has the ability to void the remaining two years under terms of the pact he signed in June. He was slated to make $5.75 million in 2000 with a $1 million bonus payable on April 1.

According to the Sun-Sentinel, Marino is expected to announce a decision on his future by March 20, when the Dolphins begin workouts under new coach Dave Wannstedt and new offensive coordinator Chan Gailey.

"We've had conversations with Dan," Wannstedt told the newspaper. "Where the thing is, Dan is weighing [his options] as he has been. When we hear something, that will be Dan's decision. The conversations we've had, I'd just as soon keep between us at this time."

Marino missed five games and part of a sixth due to a neck injury. He completed 55 percent of his passes for 2,450 yards with 12 touchdowns and 17 interceptions, his highest total in a decade.
