LAKE FOREST, Ill. (AP) -- The Chicago Bears came to terms Saturday with free-agent defensive end Phillip Daniels.

Daniels, who led the Seattle Seahawks with nine sacks in 16 starts last season, agreed to a five-year contract worth $25 million, including an $8 million signing bonus.

The 6-5, 284-pounder from Georgia had 45 tackles and a forced fumble in 1999. He had increased his sack total in each of his four NFL seasons after being a fourth-round pick in 1996.

"I think Chicago is a great city," Daniels said at a news conference at Halas Hall. "I came here to play last year when I was at Seattle and I told a friend I might be coming here next year. I don't know what made me say that but I had a feeling this team would be looking at ends and I might be coming here."

Daniels visited Halas Hall this weekend, along with Tennessee safety Marcus Robertson and Buffalo cornerback Thomas Smith.

The players were given physicals Friday by team doctors, while Bears front office officials talked with their agents about contract requirements.

Hatley said the trio had been invited to Lake Forest because the team's main areas for improvement are the defensive backfield and defensive line. Chicago ranked near the bottom of the league in defense last season.
