WASHINGTON (AP) -- The Washington Redskins are hoping to sign free agent quarterback Jeff George, the Washington Post's web site reported Saturday.

George, who spent last season with the Vikings, would be Washington's backup, the paper reported. George would backup Brad Johnson, who was a Vikings quarterback until being traded to Washington a year ago.

The Post's web site said the Redskins are prepared to offer George a multi-year contract.

Vikings coach Dennis Green has said he would like to re-sign George to a one-year deal. That would clear the way for Daunte Culpepper, a first-round draft pick in 1999, to start in 2001.

George, 32, was the Vikings' starter for much of the 1999 season. He was 9-3 as a starter, leading the team into the playoffs, where they lost to the St. Louis Rams in the second round.

The Vikings pursued Dan Marino as a replacement for George, but the Dolphins quarterback retired rather than sign with Minnesota.

After being spurned by Marino, Green turned to George. Last week, Green said he had made his best offer to George at the NFL owner meetings in Palm Beach, Fla.

"The money can't change. It can't," Green said. "We have our players, many of whom are in the middle of some very long, lengthy, expensive contracts, and therefore they've not left very much room."
