Victim of the numbers Raiders cut veteran defensive tackle MarylandPosted: Saturday April 01, 2000 04:30 PM
ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- The Oakland Raiders have released defensive tackle Russell Maryland, the No. 1 overall pick in the 1991 draft, in a move to create salary cap room. The Contra Costa Times quoted three team sources as saying Maryland, who started 63 of the Raiders' 64 games the last four years, was released Friday. Maryland, 31, signed with the Raiders as a free agent in 1996 after playing his first five seasons with Dallas. He was the first pick in the 1991 draft after starring at Miami, where he won the 1990 Outland Trophy as the nation's top lineman. Maryland's departure would clear the way for fourth-year player Grady Jackson to take his spot alongside tackle Darrell Russell in the starting lineup. Maryland would be the third defensive starter released since the end of last season, joining linebacker Richard Harvey and strong safety Anthony Newman.
