2001-02 NFL Calendar

2001

  • Dec. 28 -- Deadline for waiver requests in 2001, except for "special waiver requests" which have a 10-day claiming period, with termination or assignment delayed until after the Super Bowl.

  • Dec. 31 -- Clubs may begin signing free-agent players for the 2002 season.

    2002

  • Jan. 7 -- Regular season ends (Minnesota at Baltimore).

  • Jan. 12 -- AFC and NFC Wild Card Playoffs (ABC).

  • Jan. 13 -- AFC and NFC Wild Card Playoffs (CBS and FOX).

  • Jan. 19 -- AFC and NFC Divisional Playoffs (CBS and FOX).

  • Jan. 20 -- AFC and NFC Divisional Playoffs (CBS and FOX).

  • Jan. 27 -- AFC and NFC Championship Games (CBS and FOX)

  • Feb. 3 -- Super Bowl XXXVI, Louisiana Superdome in New Orleans (FOX)

  • Feb. 10 -- AFC-NFC Pro Bowl at Honolulu, Hawaii (ABC)

  • Feb. 18 -- Expansion Draft, Houston

  • Feb. 22 -- Waiver system begins for 2002. Players with at least four previous pension-credited seasons that a club desires to terminate are not subject to the waiver system until after the trading deadline.

  • * Feb. 22 -- Deadline at 4 p.m. EST for clubs to designate Franchise and Transition players.

  • Feb. 28 -- Expiration date of all player contracts due to expire after the 2001 season.

  • Feb. 28-March 4 -- Combine Timing and Testing, RCA Dome, Indianapolis, Ind.

  • March 1 -- Free Agency period begins.

  • March 1 -- Trading period begins for 2002 after expiration of all 2001 contracts.

  • March 17-22 -- NFL Annual Meeting, Hyatt Regency Grand Cypress, Orlando, Fla.

  • April 15 -- Deadline for signing of Offer Sheets by Restricted Free Agents.

  • April 20-21 -- NFL Draft, New York.

  • June 1 -- Deadline for club to send tender to its unsigned Restricted Free Agents or to extend Qualifying Offer, whichever is greater, in order to retain rights.

  • June 1 -- Deadline for club to send tender to its unsigned Unrestricted Free Agents to retain rights if player is not signed by another club by July 22.
