Packers sign LB Harris, talk with Maryland

GREEN BAY, Wis. (AP) -- The Green Bay Packers have signed former Miami Dolphins linebacker Anthony Harris and are negotiating with released Oakland Raiders defensive tackle Russell Maryland.

Harris, who is 6-foot-1 and 224 pounds, was signed for a year at $413,000, the league minimum, the Milwaukee Journal Sentinel said Monday.

Harris was cut by the Dolphins after last season. He started 19 of 32 games he played but his field time has suffered because of injury. He played four games last year because of a groin injury and five games in 1998 due to a knee injury.

Packers general manager Ron Wolf said that, despite Harris' lack of playing time, he had a good workout with the Packers and has a shot at making the team.

The Packers are also looking at Maryland, the No. 1 one pick in the 1991 draft. The 6-foot-1, 300-pound Maryland, formerly a starter for the Raiders, was released last week and could compete for the Packers starting nose tackle position.

Wolf said negotiations with Maryland are down to price.
