Saving money Bills release veteran players Gash, WilliamsPosted: Friday April 14, 2000 06:39 PM
ORCHARD PARK, N.Y. (AP) -- The Buffalo Bills on Friday released two-time Pro Bowl fullback Sam Gash and backup wide receiver Kevin Williams. Moving to clear room under the salary cap in time for this weekend's NFL draft, the Bills had warned Gash about six weeks ago that he could go and Gash has been courting interest with other teams. Tony Agnone, Gash's agent, said Thursday his client would have liked to stay in Buffalo. "But as he said, `I'm a big boy, I understand what the situation is.' That's the way the NFL is these days," Agnone said. Gash was set to earn $850,000 next season while Williams was to be paid $900,000. Restructuring their contracts was not an option because both were entering the final year of their deals. Also Friday, the Bills announced the re-signing of cornerback Donovan Greer and defensive back Daryl Porter, both free agents, and released wide receiver Kamil Loud. Gash's departure leaves a hole in the Bills' offensive blocking scheme. While he did not carry the ball once in 16 games last season, his blocking ability earned him his second straight Pro Bowl selection. Losing Williams leaves the Bills with only three receivers on the depth chart. The salary cap has forced the Bills into several moves in recent months. In February, the team released veterans Andre Reed, Bruce Smith and Thurman Thomas.
