'He can still play' Elway: Young could lead Broncos to Super BowlPosted: Wednesday April 26, 2000 02:30 PM
DENVER (AP) -- Steve Young could lead the Denver Broncos to the Super Bowl if he decides to play next season and if coach Mike Shanahan can some how find a way to bring the San Francisco 49ers quarterback to Denver, former Broncos quarterback John Elway said. "Obviously, he can still play and he's got a lot of experience and knows this system," Elway said Tuesday during a news conference for his celebrity golf tournament. "I think he could come in here and hit the ground running because he's been with Mike [Shanahan] and [offensive coordinator] Gary [Kubiak]." Young missed the final 13 games of the 1999 season because of a severe concussion and his agent, Leigh Steinberg said Young is expected to be cleared to play again and is leaning toward returning. "I think he can still play," Elway said. "It's a matter if he can still take the hits. From everything I've seen, it's going to really be up to whether Steve wants to play or not." San Francisco 49ers officials have said their doctors might not clear him and he could be released after June 1. Young has said he wants a chance to win another Super Bowl and reportedly has told close friends he wants to be reunited with Shanahan. Young played for Shanahan when he was the 49ers offensive coordinator from 1992 to 1994. Young passed for more than 11,000 yards while playing under Shanahan and was named Most Valuable Player of Super Bowl XXIX.
