Eric Turner Friends have described Eric Turner's situation as grave. David Taylor/Allsport

ALAMEDA, Calif. (AP) -- Eric Turner of the Oakland Raiders reportedly has a serious illness, with one newspaper saying he has lost 70 pounds from his playing weight of 215.

The Raiders have refused comment on the 31-year-old free safety, who did not attend the team's minicamp in late April for personal reasons.

The Los Angeles Daily News first reported the story, saying last week the former Pro Bowl player has a serious stomach illness.

The newspaper quoted an unidentified Raiders official as saying, "It's a terrible, terrible situation ... people should really be concerned for this kid."

"It started out as an ulcer and it's developed into something worse," the Raiders official told the Daily News.

A message was left at the office of Turner's agent, Michael Sullivan.

Several other San Francisco Bay area newspapers reported late last week that Turner was ill. On Sunday, the San Jose Mercury News reported Turner is gravely ill with intestinal cancer. One source quoted by the newspaper said Turner was resting at his home near Los Angeles and had lost 70 pounds.

Turner, a nine-year pro who attended UCLA, was the second overall pick in the 1991 NFL draft by the Cleveland Browns. He was selected to the Pro Bowl in 1994 after tying for the NFL lead with nine interceptions, including one he returned 93 yards for a touchdown.

Turner signed with the Raiders as a free agent before the 1997 season. He led the team in tackles his first year with 111, but was limited to just six games in 1998 because of a foot injury and missed the final six games of last season with a calf injury.

Lions re-sign defensive tackle Pritchett

The Lions have re-signed unrestricted free agent defensive lineman Kelvin Pritchett to a one-year deal, with an additional one-year club option, the team announced Monday.

Contract terms were not disclosed.

Pritchett, a tackle, was a key member of the Lions regular defensive line rotation in 1999. Participating mostly in a backup role, Pritchett played in all 16 games, starting twice.

In 1999, he had 26 tackles, 20 solo, and six assists.

Pritchett played with Jacksonville from 1995-97, after playing with the Lions from 1991-94. He was acquired in a draft-day trade with the Dallas Cowboys during the 1991 NFL draft.

He was drafted out of Ole Miss where he was a third-team All American defensive end in 1990.

Bucs re-sign Robinson for one year

The Tampa Bay Buccaneers re-signed restricted free agent safety Damien Robinson to a one-year contract on Monday.

Robinson, who has been with the team since 1997, started 16 games at free safety and had 95 tackles and two interceptions last season. The interceptions were the first of his career.

Saints fill scout, player development positions

The New Orleans Saints hired James Jefferson as an area scout and Ricky Porter as director of player development and community relations, the team announced Monday.

Jefferson, who coached at both Texas A&M-Kingsville and Alabama State, will scout the southwestern part of the United States.

Jefferson was a defensive back with the Winnipeg Blue Bombers of the CFL.

Porter spent 1997-99 with the Denver Broncos serving in various capacities including assistant strength and conditioning coach.

With the Saints, Porter will work with player development and manage the weekly appearances and contributions of players in the community.
