MOBILE, Ala. (AP) -- A Mobile man was being held without bond in the Mobile County Metro Jail after being arrested on charges linked to the investigation of former football star Sherman Williams.

Federal agents, assisted by local police, captured Roderick Ward at a motel here Wednesday. He is charged with counterfeiting and conspiracy to possess with intent to distribute marijuana.

Ward appeared before U.S. Magistrate William Steele and will be held pending a bail hearing Monday.

Williams, a former running back at the University of Alabama who later played four seasons with the Dallas Cowboys, was arrested in April.

Authorities say he had been a major marijuana dealer in the Mobile area for several years.

Court papers filed with Ward's arrest show the case against him began with a Secret Service investigation into whether he tried to pass counterfeit bills in November.

Federal agents questioned a dancer at a Mobile strip club after she tried to pass the bogus $100 bills.

The woman told investigators she got the money from Williams, a man known as "Juice" and a third man.

The men convinced her to dance at a private party at Williams' club, Shake 20, in Prichard and paid her $900, she said.

Last week, investigators questioned Ward, who said Williams told him to pay the dancer with money from a desk drawer.

Ward said he knew the bills were fake, according to the affidavit filed with his arrest.

Ward also admitted taking at least 25 pounds of marijuana from Williams with the understanding that he would sell it, the affidavit states.
