Recovering Dolphin Fiedler may be able to return for final exhibition game
DAVIE, Fla. (AP) -- Miami Dolphins quarterback Jay Fiedler's hip surgery was successful and he may be able to play in the team's final exhibition game. Fiedler had the surgery late Thursday for an injury that has bothered him since the start of training camp. He had been battling Damon Huard for the team's starting quarterback spot. "Jay's surgery went well," Wannstedt said. "I had a chance to talk to him this morning and he is resting comfortable without pain." While the Dolphins hope he can return for the final exhibition on Aug. 25, he may in the final exhibition game Aug. 25, but he might be sidelined until early in the regular season, which starts Sept. 3. Either way, Huard becomes the starter as the Dolphins head into their first season without Dan Marino since 1982. Fiedler underwent an MRI late Wednesday, which indicated surgery was needed to repair a tear in his hip joint. He was bothered earlier this summer by a sore back and continued to practice even after his hip began to hurt a week ago. Fiedler backed up Mark Brunell last year for the Jacksonville Jaguars, then signed a three-year, $3.8 million contract with the Dolphins in February.
