CHICAGO (AP) -- Cleveland Browns quarterback Ty Detmer was lost for the season Saturday night when he ruptured his right Achilles' tendon while scrambling to avoid a sack.

Detmer, 32, the former Heisman Trophy winner at Brigham Young, was entering his ninth season and had played well against Philadelphia in the preseason opener. He was hurt on the third scrimmage play of the second half against Chicago.

"We've been chewed up pretty good. We'll look at the emergency list of quarterbacks," Browns coach Chris Palmer said.

"Ty is a true professional. It's not like someone in the offensive line broke down. It looked like he was just trying to run and change direction. ... We'll miss him, his leadership."

Detmer played four years with Green Bay, two with the Eagles and one with the San Francisco before joining the Browns last season.

"It hurts anytime you lose a guy with nine years experience," said starting quarterback Tim Couch, who threw three interceptions in the Browns' 19-6 loss to the Bears.

The Browns also have rookie Spergon Wynn on their roster.

Detmer has completed 454 of 795 career passes for 5,445 yards with 31 touchdowns during his career. He completed 12 of 14 passes against the Eagles last week.

"We'll definitely miss Ty's leadership," defensive end Stolin Colinet said.

"It's really rough for him. We all said a prayer for him tonight. We hope he can find his way back to the field."

The Browns also lost backup offensive lineman Jeremy McKinney, who tore the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee when he bumped into a teammate and collapsed.
