CASTLE ROCK, Colo. (AP) -- The wife of Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski will not be arraigned on drug charges until October.

Julie Romanowski, accused of conspiring with a friend and a doctor to get prescription diet drugs for her husband, appeared Monday in Douglas County District Court. But her scheduled arraignment was postponed until Oct. 5.

Mike Knight, a spokesman for the Douglas County district attorney, said the defense requested the postponement. Defense attorney Harvey Steinberg did not return a phone call.

Bill Romanowski, indicted last week in the case, accompanied his wife in court. He signed an autograph for a fan but the couple declined to comment as they left holding hands.

He is due to appear in court Aug. 28.

Julie Romanowski faces eight counts of fraudulently obtaining a controlled substance, the appetite suppressant Phentermine, and conspiracy.

Friend Loretta Johnson and Dr. Randall Snook were accused of participating.

Johnson pleaded guilty in January to conspiring to illegally obtain a prescription drug. Snook pleaded guilty to a misdemeanor and received 18 months' probation.

Bill Romanowski was indicted on four felonies counts accusing him of using the drug, which some doctors believe helps athletes by speeding up their metabolisms. But others say the drug does little or nothing to improve the performance of athletes.
