Sports Illustrated report Romanowski may have given drug to teammates
ATLANTA (CNNSI.com) -- Last week, a grand jury indicted Denver Broncos linebacker Bill Romanowski on charges of fraudulently obtaining the diet drug Phentermine. Now, this week's Sports Illustrated reports that Romanowski may have distributed drugs to teammates. The magazine reports that center David Diaz-Infante told authorities that Romanowski gave him the drug on one occassion, and sources told the magazine that former Bronco Martin Harrison gave prosecutors a written statement saying that Romanowski had offered him pills as pre-game stimulants. Sports Illustrated also reports that a white player told both the grand jury and the magazine that Romanowski suggested he take the drug because, "It is the only way we can compete with the black guys." That same player told SI that Romanowski didn't say "black guys," but rather, used the "N-word." Romanowski's lawyer told SI that the grand jury had rejected assertions that his client offered drugs to other players. The lawyer also denied that Romanowski had made such statements about black players. The case isn't expected to go to trial until after the season.
