Chiefs may go after Brunell if Jags can't re-sign him

KANSAS CITY, Mo. (AP) -- The Chiefs are looking at four new faces in their search for a quarterback, including Jacksonville's Mark Brunell.

The other quarterbacks include the top two quarterbacks from the Super Bowl champion Baltimore Ravens, Trent Dilfer and Tony Banks. Both are scheduled to visit with the Chiefs this week. And the Chiefs interviewed Jacksonville backup Jamie Martin on Tuesday.

Brunell is the biggest name of the bunch. The three-time Pro Bowl player has twice taken Jacksonville to the AFC championship game. Brunell is renegotiating his contract with the Jaguars.

Brunell is due a $2.5 million roster bonus March 31, and the Jaguars, who have little wiggle room in their salary cap, may be in no position to pay it. Jacksonville had to release several veteran players before the start of free-agency to comply with the salary cap.

Chiefs head coach Dick Vermeil said the Chiefs and Jaguars have had conversations about Brunell. No trade offers were made either way.

The Jaguars also could release Brunell and allow him to become a free agent.

"They're negotiating a contract with him," Vermeil said. "We're just sort of following what's happening with that. If they get to a point where they feel they're not able to sign him, that's when we might take a closer look."

Dilfer took the Ravens on their four-game romp through the playoffs, but Baltimore showed no interest in re-signing him and he became a free agent. Interest in Dilfer around the league has been slight.

Banks and Martin played for Vermeil in St. Louis. The Rams traded Banks, their starter, to Baltimore before the start of the 1999 season to make room for Trent Green. St. Louis released Martin in 1997, and he later played with Washington, Cleveland and Jacksonville.

"I'm not bringing these guys in here to sign them," Vermeil said. "I'm bringing them here to cover all the bases. That's all it is right now."

The Chiefs have attended workouts of several college quarterbacks recently, including Oklahoma's Josh Heupel, Iowa State's Sage Rosenfels and Louisiana State's Josh Booty.

The Chiefs will be in Indiana Wednesday to watch Purdue's Drew Brees.
