DENVER (AP) -- The Kansas City Chiefs may be interested in trying to lure Pro Bowl quarterback Brian Griese out of Denver, a newspaper reported Friday.

Citing unidentified team officials, The Denver Post said the Chiefs have asked Griese's agent, Ralph Cindrich, about bringing the restricted free agent to Kansas City next week for a visit.

Cindrich did not return calls seeking comment Friday.

Kansas City is in desperate need of a quarterback but would pay a heavy price for Griese. Denver could match any offer, and if Griese signed with the Chiefs, Kansas City would have to give the Broncos first- and third-round picks in next month's draft.

Cindrich refused to comment on the report. "The report regarding possible interest from other NFL clubs did not come from our office," he said Friday.

Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan said he feels like the team has enough leverage to either protect Griese or get a good deal if he signs elsewhere.

He would not say whether progress has been made in contract talks between the Broncos and Griese. Griese has said he wants to stay in Denver.

Griese, the NFL's top-rated quarterback last season, separated his shoulder in November and was sidelined for five weeks. He took only six snaps in the season finale and was unable to play in the Pro Bowl or in Denver's AFC wildcard playoff loss to Baltimore.
