DENVER (AP) -- Quarterback Brian Griese and the Denver Broncos are close to signing a seven-year, $42 million contract.

The Denver Post reported Friday said sources close to Griese reported the deal could be completed in the next week.

The contract would be the richest given to a Broncos quarterback, exceeding the five-year, $29.5 million agreement reached with longtime franchise standout John Elway before the 1996 season.

Broncos spokesman Jim Saccomano on Friday said contract negotiations were ongoing.

"We haven't signed Brian to a new contract. Of course, it's widely known this is a very strong desire on the part of ours," Saccomano said.

Griese's agent, Ralph Cindrich, didn't return calls Friday.

The Kansas City Chiefs have expressed interest in Griese, who is a restricted free agent. Denver has the right to match any offers.

Broncos head coach Mike Shanahan repeatedly has compared Griese to former San Francisco standout Joe Montana, and the contract would be based as much for his past performances as his potential.

Griese, the NFL's top-rated quarterback last season, separated his shoulder in November and was sidelined for five weeks. He took only six snaps in the season finale and was unable to play in the Pro Bowl or in Denver's AFC wild-card playoff loss to Baltimore.
