The New England Patriots, desperate to shore up their cornerback position less than two weeks before training camp begins, will announce the signing of veteran defensive back Terrell Buckley on Friday afternoon.
Buckley, who has never fulfilled the promise predicted of him as a first-round pick by Green Bay out of Florida State in 1992, will likely compete for a starting job opposite Ty Law. Law, one of the highest-paid NFL cornerbacks, had a so-so season in 2000 and the Patriots hope the addition of Buckley will spur improvement in Law's game and in the secondary as a whole.
Buckley played in 15 games for Denver last season, intercepting six passes and scoring one touchdown. He has 38 interceptions over his nine-year career with Green Bay, Miami and Denver.
