ORCHARD PARK, New York (Ticker) -- The
Buffalo Bills
hope a return home provides a cure for their sputtering offense as they host the
Houston Texans
on Sunday.
After being one of the most active teams in free agency, the Bills have been a major disappointment and are in third place in the AFC East, one game behind Miami and three back of New England.
The Bills' spending spree in the free agent market concentrated on revamping the defense. But so far this season, the Bills' offense has been the major problem.
After scoring 69 points in winning their first two games, the Bills have totaled just 80 points while going 2-5 in their last seven contests. On the road, the Bills have failed to score an offensive touchdown in their last four games.
But being back at Ralph Wilson Stadium, the Bills will be looking to get struggling quarterback
Drew Bledsoe
going. In his last four games, Bledsoe has thrown one touchdown pass, five interceptions, lost five fumbles and been sacked 14 times.
Bills coach Gregg Williams, whose job could be in jeopardy, defended his quarterback.
"We as an offense have to find ways to score touchdowns. It's not just Drew," Williams said. "We're not winning ballgames. It's a team game."
In last Sunday's 10-6 loss at Dallas, Bledsoe completed 17-of-34 passes for just 104 yards. He was sacked three times and lost a pair of fumbles.
Last season, Bledsoe led the Bills to a 31-24 victory over the Texans in Houston. He completed 19-of-33 passes for 254 yards and two touchdowns. His second TD pass was a 26-yard connection to
Peerless Price
with 3:55 remaining that snapped a 24-24 tie.
David Carr
attempted to lead his own comeback for the Texans. But on 4th-and-8 from the Buffalo 12 with 30 seconds left, Carr intended to hit
Jermaine Lewis
in the end zone, but the pass fell incomplete in double coverage.
The Texans have lost four of their last five games, including last Sunday's 34-27 defeat at Cincinnati. Carr returned after missing one game with an ankle injury to complete 11-of-25 passes for 146 yards and two touchdowns.
Rookie
Domanick Davis
continued to be a huge surprise for the Texans, rushing for 104 yards and a TD against the Bengals. The fourth-round pick out of Louisiana State has three 100-yard games in his last four contests.
