Dallas roared to a 17-0 lead on touchdown runs of 63 and 24 yards by Smith just 18 seconds apart in the second quarter. But just as Smith was crosssing the goal line on his second TD run, Minnesota linebacker Ed McDaniel broke a bone in Smith's right hand while trying to punch the ball away.
With just over 10 minutes remaining in the third quarter, Aikman was knocked out of the game with a mild concussion after being sacked by Minnesota's Jerry Ball. Jason Garrett relieved Aikman and completed just 3-of-11 passes for four yards and an interception.
With the Vikings trailing 17-0, Moss caught a four-yard TD pass pass from Jeff George in the back of the end zone with 1:53 to go in the first half, cutting the deficit to 10 points.
Gary Anderson cut the deficit to 17-13 with third-quarter field goals of 31 and 40 yards before Minnesota went ahead for good with 13:38 remaining when George found Cris Carter from four yards away for a 20-17 lead.
The clinching touchdown came with 5:10 remaining. George threw a 47-yard bomb to Moss, who hauled it in along the right sideline for his fifth career TD catch in two games against Dallas.
George, who threw for just 33 yards in the first half, finished 17-of-30 passes for 218 yards.
Smith and the Cowboys struck quickly in the second quarter.
With 6:21 remaining, Smith burst up the middle for a 63-yard TD run. One play after Dallas' Charlie Williams recovered a fumble on the ensuing kickoff, Smith, who had 140 yards on 13 carries, broke through on a 24-yard TD run.
