MIAMI (Ticker) -- The Miami Dolphins bounced back from a lopsided loss by inflicting one of their own.

Lamar Smith ran for 144 yards and a touchdown and defensive end Jason Taylor returned a fumble for a score as the Dolphins routed the New England Patriots, 30-10.

The Dolphins (3-1) were manhandled in a 42-10 loss at St. Louis last week and did the same to the Patriots on Sunday, controlling the ball for over 36 minutes and sacking quarterback Tom Brady four times.

"It was a very serious week and a very focused week on getting ready to play as good as we can against New England today," Dolphins coach Dave Wannstedt said. "It was a good solid win. We did the things that we like to do and that is win football games.

Smith, who carried 29 times, scored on a seven-yard run in the first quarter to cap a 14-play, 80-yard drive that took 8:24 off the clock.

"It was a matter of staying poised and going for those one- and two-yard gains, then eventually, I'm going to get those 10 and 15-yard gains," said Smith, who was held to 49 yards last week.

"He needed this today," Wannstedt said of Smith. "He's been working so hard and to get him on track at home was a real confidence builder."

Miami quarterback Jay Fielder was more effective on the ground than in the air. He completed 11-of-21 passes for 87 yards, including a 14-yard TD pass to tight end Jed Weaver in the second quarter. He also carried seven times for 37 yards, with four of the rushes going for first downs.

Olindo Mare added field goals of 19, 34 and 27 yards for the Dolphins.

The Patriots (1-3) showed that a 44-13 win over Indianapolis last week may have indeed been a fluke by committing four turnovers.

"We just got our butt kicked today. They were a better football team than us today," Patriots coach Bill Belichick said. "No if, ands or buts about it."

Brady completed just 12-of-24 passes for 86 yards. Late in the third quarter, he fumbled a snap from center that Taylor picked up and walked one yard into the end zone for a score.

"The ball was just on the ground. I don't know what happened on the play. I just happened to see the ball," Taylor said. "I didn't have far to go. So if I missed that one, I would have been in trouble."

It was the third time in his career that Taylor returned a fumble for a score.

"It was just bad execution and we didn't get it done," Brady said.

The day started positively for the Patriots after linebacker Mike Vrabel intercepted a pass from Fielder and returned it 15 yards to the Miami 10. Antowain Smith scored two plays later on a nine-yard run.

Alter Lamar Smith tied the game with his scoring run, New England's Troy Brown fumbled a punt that led to a field goal by Mare.

Adam Vinatieri kicked a 37-yard field goal for the Patriots before Weaver caught his first career TD pass to give the Dolphins a 17-10 halftime lead.

Mare kicked a pair of field goals in the second-half sandwiched around Taylor's score.
