CANTON, Ohio (Ticker) -- David Carr's introduction to professional football was productive. Jeremy Shockey's was eye-opening.

Shockey caught four passes for 80 yards and a touchdown and safety Clarence LeBlanc returned an interception 99 yards for a score as the New York Giants posted a 34-17 triumph over the Houston Texans in the Hall of Fame Game.

The initial game in Texans' history featured the debut of the top overall pick Carr, who looked solid. Carr completed 9-of-17 passes for 96 yards and a touchdown. He led Houston on three scoring drives and threw just one interception.

But it was the play of the Giants' first-round pick, former Miami tight end Shockey, that stood out. Shockey had a 12-yard-reception on New York's opening drive -- which resulted in a touchdown -- and added a 47-yard catch and run just before the half. He caught three passes on that possession, including a nine-yard scoring strike from backup quarterback Jesse Palmer.

New York also got a big effort from wide receiver Jonathan Carter, who had three catches for 100 yards and a score.

Houston quarterback Ben Sankey was 12-of-21 for 127 yards but was intercepted twice. Former Giant Kent Graham was 4-for-4 for 56 yards for the Texans.

The game was marred by a spinal injury to Houston safety Leomont Evans. Evans was hurt rushing the punter early in the second quarter and had to be immobilized and removed from the field on a stretcher.

Evans was taken to Aultman Hospital in Canton and, according to team physician Walter Lowe, has been diagnosed with a spinal cord contusion. Lowe also revealed that Evans had no feeling in his arms or legs while on the field.
