BALTIMORE (Ticker) -- This was not the way Joey Harrington was looking to start his NFL career.

Harrington had an interception returned 18 yards for a touchdown by rookie Will Demps with 1:55 remaining as the Baltimore Ravens posted a 12-6 exhibition victory over the Detroit Lions.

The third overall pick in April's draft, Harrington reportedly has been impressive during training camp and is vying with Mike McMahon for the starting job in Detroit.

But Harrington, who enterted midway through the third quarter, made a critical rookie mistake in the waning seconds of his professional debut.

Working in the shadow of his own end zone, Harrington threw an errant pass over the middle that Demps, an undrafted strong safety out of San Diego, stepped in front of and brought back for the decisive score.

Harrington completed 12-of-21 passes for 117 yards and two interceptions.

McMahon, who concluded last season as the Lions' starter, was even less impressive as he went 8-of-20 for 65 yards and an interception. With McMahon running the team, Detroit got field goals of 42 and 53 yards from Jason Hanson.

After their roster was purged in the offseason by the salary cap, the Ravens are a shell of the team that won the Super Bowl two seasons ago and have just two returning starters on defense.

But Baltimore's defense somehow resembled its 2000 record-setting club, collecting eight sacks and forcing three turnovers.

Chris Redman, the Ravens' new starter at quarterback following the retirement of Elvis Grbac, went 10-of-20 for 93 yards with an interception. Jeff Blake, who signed as a free agent, followed Redman and was 8-of-15 for 75 yards.

Matt Stover kicked a 44-yard field goal and J.R. Jenkins connected from 47 yards for the Ravens.
