CHAMPAIGN, Illinois (Ticker) -- Denver Broncos coach Mike Shanahan had to like what he saw.

Steve Beuerlein and Brian Griese both played well as the Broncos opened their exhibition season with a 27-3 rout of the Chicago Bears.

Shanahan, who has guided the Broncos to a pair of Super Bowl titles, has stated during training camp that starting spots are for grabs at many positions, including quarterback.

Injury prone, Griese has been the starting quarterback the last three seasons and enters this year first on the depth chart. He started in this one, going 7-of-9 for 48 yards.

A former Pro Bowler with Carolina, Beuerlein missed all of last season with an injured right elbow. He has looked good in training camp and carried that over to Saturday.

Beuerlein went 9-of-12 for 78 yards, including a five-yard touchdown pass to tight end Dwayne Carswell early in the second quarter that gave Denver a 7-3 lead.

Jason Elam added a pair of field goals and Tony Carter and quarterback Jarious Jackson each scored on short TD runs for Denver.

Broncos second-round pick running back Clinton Portis carried 13 times for 57 yards.

Paul Edinger kicked a 36-yard field goal in the first quarter for the Bears, who are playing their home games at the University of Illinois this season while Soldier Field is renovated.

Chris Chandler, who signed with the Bears as a free agent and will backup Jim Miller, went 1-of-3 for six yards.
