CHARLOTTE, North Carolina (Ticker) -- An offensive night for the Washington Redskins ended with the defense coming up big. Defensive tackle Carl Powell returned an interception 21 yards for a touchdown with 69 seconds remaining, lifting the Redskins to a wild 37-30 exhibition victory over the Carolina Panthers. In his fourth year out of Louisivlle, Powell put the Redskins in front for good when he stepped in front of a pass by Mike Watkins. The play by Powell helped overshadow another big night for Redskins' offense under new coach Steve Spurrier. In last week's 38-7 win over San Francisco, Spurrier was criticized after Washington quarterbacks attempted 45 passes. Spurrier's "Fun 'n' Gun" offense was even more wide open in this one as Shane Matthews, Danny Wuerffel and Sage Rosenfels combined to throw 47 times. Matthews, who played under Spurrier at Florida and is the frontrunner to start in Washington, played the first half and went 17-of-27 for 195 yards with two touchdowns and an interception. Wuerffel was 8-of-11 for 102 yards while Rosenfels went 5-of-9 for 60 yards. Washington had 11 different players catch a pass. Derrius Thomspon led the bunch with five receptions for 73 yards. The big offensive night by the Redskins also helped spoil the debut of new Panthers coach John Fox and a pair of big performances from rookies. Second-round pick DeShaun Foster out of UCLA, carried seven times for 87 yards, including a 61-yard touchdown run in the second quarter. Quarterback Randy Fasani, one of the club's fifth-round picks, went 6-of-9 for 151 yards and a touchdown. |
