EAST RUTHERFORD, New Jersey (Ticker) -- Wide receiver Jonathan Carter made a strong case for a spot on the New York Giants' final roster. A fifth-round draft pick last year, Carter scored on a spectacular 75-yard touchdown reception midway through the fourth quarter as the Giants blanked the Baltimore Ravens, 13-0, in the preseason finale for both clubs. The contest was a sloppy affair played before a sparse crowd at Giants Stadium on a rainy night, but Carter electrified the few remaining fans. He reached behind his back to catch an underthrown pass from Jason Garrett with one hand, then used his speed to race down the left sideline for the game's only touchdown. Carter was used sparingly last year on returns. Prior to Carter's touchdown -- the Giants' offense consisted of two field goals -- a 26-yarder by Owen Pochman with 11 seconds left in the first half and a 39-yarder by Matt Bryant with 8:04 left in the third quarter. The Giants, who finished the preseason 2-2, played without several regulars, including quarterback Kerry Collins, running backs Tiki Barber and Ron Dayne, tight end Jeremy Shockey and wide receiver Amani Toomer. Jesse Palmer played the entire first half and completed 15-of-22 for 172 yards for the Giants. Garrett was 7-of-11 for 163 yards. Prior to Carter's touchdown, the Ravens had a chance to take the lead, but tight end Jonathan Burrough dropped a wide-open pass in the end zone. Baltimore came away empty as punter Dave Zastudil fumbled the snap on a field goal attempt. Baltimore's first-team offense did not score a touchdown in the entire preseason. The Ravens also concluded the exhibition slate with a 2-2 mark. Rookie Chris Redman, who could begin the season as the Ravens' starter, was just 6-of-12 for 47 yards in the opening half. Jeff Blake took over in the second half and was 10-of-21 for 163 yards. The Giants kick off the NFL season at home on Thursday night, September 5 against the San Francisco Giants. Three days later, Baltimore opens at Carolina. |
