ORCHARD PARK, New York (Ticker) --
Donovan McNabb
finally played like
Donovan McNabb
.
McNabb played a mistake-free game and
Brian Westbrook
provided a jolt to the running game as the
Philadelphia Eagles
won for the first time this season with a 23-13 victory over the
Buffalo Bills
.
After reaching the NFC championship game in each of the last two seasons, the Eagles managed just 10 points in losing their first two games. McNabb had completed just 45 percent (37-of-82) of his passes with three interceptions.
But McNabb looked more like the NFL's highest-paid quarterback in this one. He led scoring drives on the Eagles' first two possessions and completed 18-of-29 passes for 171 yards while rushing for 49 yards on seven attempts.
"Donovan came back from the first play on, he showed what Donovan's all about," Eagles coach Andy Reid said. "He did a nice job."
After the Bills scored twice in the fourth quarter, McNabb made perhaps his biggest play with just over two minutes when he found
James Thrash
for 14 yards on a 3rd-and-7 play.
"Offensively we were on the sideline, we got together and said, 'We get a couple of first downs, get the ball in the end zone, this game is over,'" McNabb said. "We had another opportunity to get back out there. James (Thrash) did a wonderful job of peeling away from the defender. I just tried to put it in a position where he could catch it, get the first down, eat up the clock a little bit."
Two plays later, Westbrook sealed the win by busting up the middle and racing 62 yards for his first career touchdown. He carried 11 times for 96 yards.
"On that one play (the touchdown run) they were overplaying the one side," Westbrook said. "My offensive line did a good job, just pushing everybody down. It opened up for me, I had to make one man miss."
Led by Westbrook, the Eagles rushed for 177 yards.
Drew Bledsoe
passed for a touchdown and ran for a score in the fourth for the Bills (2-2), who lost their second straight game.
Despite missing a pair of Pro Bowlers in the secondary, the Eagles limited the Bills to five first downs and held a 16-0 lead entering the fourth quarter.
The Eagles also lost Pro Bowl cornerback
Troy Vincent
to a hamstring injury in the first quarter.
But Bledsoe was able to engineer scoring drives of 67 and 69 yards to get the Bills back in the game.
Bledsoe's first scoring drive resulted in a three-yard touchdown pass on 4th-and-goal to
Bobby Shaw
with 9:12 remaining. But the two-point conversion failed, leaving the Bills behind, 16-6.
After the Eagles went three-and-out, Bledsoe moved the Bills 69 yards in 12 plays. Again he converted on 4th-and-goal, sneaking in from one-yard to pull the Bills within 16-13 with 2:49 to play.
Bledsoe, who was without star running back
Travis Henry
(ribs), completed 27-of-43 passes for 296 yards with one touchdown. He also lost a fumble.
"I felt like we were fighting an uphill battle an awful lot," Bledsoe said. "We just didn't make enough plays. We had too many negative plays, too many penalties that put us in long yardage situations, it makes it very hard to overcome. We didn't run it very well, didn't throw it well enough."
Eric Moulds
and Shaw each had eight receptions. Moulds finished with 114 yards and Shaw had 92.
Joe Burns
replaced Henry in the backfield and rushed for just 17 yards on eight attempts.
After Bledsoe's second touchdown, the Eagles took over on their own 20 with 2:49 remaining. On 3rd-and-7, McNabb was able to hang in the pocket and find Thrash, who made a leaping catch along the right sideline for 14 yards.
"Thrash's catch at the end was a big catch," Reid said.
Westbrook, the Eagles' fastest running back, sealed the win with his jaunt to the end zone.
McNabb led an eight-play, 71-yard drive on the game's opening possession. The drive featured completions of 27 yards to
Todd Pinkston
and a 25-yard run by McNabb to the Bills 17.
"It's tough (facing McNabb) especially when you play against a scrambling quarterback," Bills cornerback
Antoine Winfield
said. "With his talent, when he gets out in the open, and makes people miss, and makes plays with his feet. He's a pretty good quarterback and he showed that today."
Correll Buckhalter
capped the drive with a two-yard run, giving the Eagles an early 7-0 lead.
McNabb, who completed eight of his first 10 passes, led a 16-play, 65-yard drive on the Eagles' next possession. He had a 16-yard completion to Thrash on 3rd-and-6 to the Buffalo 43 and an 11-yard connection with Pinkston on 3rd-and-8 to the 22.
But the drive stalled and
David Akers
kicked a 26-yard field goal, giving the Eagles a 10-0 lead with nine seconds left in the quarter.
In the first quarter, the Eagles held the ball for more than 13 minutes, garnered a 126 to minus-3 advantage in total yards and had nine first downs compared to none for Buffalo.
"Every week we talk about having a fast start," Bills coach Gregg Williams said. "We woke up too late in the ballgame."
The Bills drove into Eagles territory late in the second quarter and Bledsoe completed a pass to Shaw. But strong safety
Michael Lewis
jarred the ball loose and free safety
Clinton Hart
recovered and returned the fumble inside Buffalo territory. Hart fumbled on his return but
Roderick Hood
recovered again for the Eagles, giving them possession at midfield.
McNabb moved the Eagles into scoring position with completions of nine and 15 yards to
Freddie Mitchell
. The drive stalled at the 16 and Akers kicked a 34-yard field goal, making it 13-0 with nine seconds left in the half.
Late in the third quarter, McNabb led a 14-play, 70-yard drive that resulted in a 22-yard field goal by Akers with 26 seconds left in the period.
