Tight end Shannon Sharpe led the Broncos with 72 catches this season, for 1,107 yards. But he might be best known for the phone call he pretended to make, for the benefit of television viewers, late in a 1996 Denver rout of New England. Sharpe grabbed a red phone on the sideline and shouted, to the dismay of Patriots fans: "President, call in the National Guard! Send as many men as you can spare! Because we are killing the Patriots! They need emergency help!"
