Week 5 NFL Top Performers Posted: Tuesday October 06, 1998 12:21 AM
Terrell Davis put in a half-day of work on Sunday -- which is a couple of games' worth to most NFL running backs -- and turned in one of the most impressive performances of this young NFL season. In a week peppered with surprising offensive shows, the Denver Broncos' Davis showed once again that he just may be the best in the business at his position, at least this season. While Detroit's Barry Sanders continues his on-again, off-again season (he ran for 28 yards on 14 attempts Sunday in the Lions' loss to the previously winless Chicago Bears), Davis ripped off another gem of a game, his fourth straight 100-yard effort of the season. And he did it by only working a half. Here's a look at the week's top performers. Offensive Outburst AwardYou can look to the surprising Atlanta Falcons, who pinned an embarrassing 51 points on the hapless Carolina Panthers, the second biggest point total Atlanta ever has run up and the highest the Panthers have ever allowed. But, for true shockers, how about two Dallas Cowboys running backs each going for more than 100 yards in the same game for the first time in nearly 20 years? Emmitt Smith and Chris Warren did the job in the Cowboys 31-10 beating of the winless Washington Redskins, who have now allowed a back to run for 100 yards in each of their four losses this season. Early call for the busts of the year: The high-priced duo of Dana Stubblefield and Dan "Big Daddy" Wilkinson on the Washington defensive line. Top Ground Gainer AwardThe aforementioned Davis ran for 168 yards and two touchdowns in a half of play as the Broncos smashed the winless -- yes, yet another winless wonder -- Philadelphia Eagles. Davis has eight touchdowns and is averaging 5.8 yards a carry in the Broncos' five wins, both top marks for anyone with at least 50 carries. Oh, his 657 yards -- an average of 131.4 yards a game -- is best in the league, too. Watch out when he plays a full game. Losing Effort AwardDetroit quarterback Charlie Batch is doing all he can to pull the Lions -- they have won one -- out of the early season doldrums. Scott Mitchell's replacement threw for 268 yards and two touchdowns in a loss to the Bears. But that wasn't all he did. The rookie from Eastern Michigan ran for a team-high 58 yards, too, thus accounting for 324 of the 362 yards his team gained in the loss.
