Week 7 NFL Top Performers

Barry Sanders had a 73-yard scoring run in a 155-yard performance in the Lions' upset of Green Bay AP

Before you go saying that the weekly awards are getting predictable, consider a few things: first, Terrell Davis didn't even play this week; second, Steve Young did have his sixth straight 300-yard game, but he won't take home any honors this week; and finally, this week's Losing Effort Award has nothing to do with the Panthers or Redskins.

The list isn't all Pro Bowlers and future Hall of Famers -- while he won't take home any awards this week, Saints receiver Keith Poole had 154 receiving yards Sunday -- impressive in that he had just 157 in his previous year and a half in the league. In all of last season, Poole had four catches and two touchdowns. Shows what Billy Joe Tolliver can do for a player's offensive production.

Top Ground Gainer Award

Barry Sanders' 155-yard performance in the Lions' upset of Green Bay on Thursday is even more impressive when you consider that Sanders had an 80-yard touchdown run brought back by a holding penalty. Sanders had to settle for a 73-yard scoring run, Detroit's last touchdown and the final margin of victory. Much like last season, Sanders is emerging from a slow start and dominating -- he's averaging 4.9 yards a carry and entered Thursday's game 20 yards ahead of where he was last season at the same point. Terrell Davis has the rushing lead right now, but there's no telling who will finish the season on top and what records will fall when Sanders and Davis are done running this year.

Offensive Outburst Award

This one could go to 49ers wonder-QB Steve Young (again) but instead we go back to Thursday again and honor Lions quarterback Charlie Batch, who completed 16 of 19 passes (a staggering 84 percent) for 218 yards and two touchdowns passes. The rookie's poise in a prime time matchup with three-time MVP Brett Favre was evident throughout -- his play-action fake handoff on a 3-yard touchdown pass to tight end Pete Chryplewicz was smart, and handing off to Sanders 25 times was even smarter. The second-rounder has sparked the Lions and will lead them back into the wild-card chase while Scott Mitchell watches from the bench.

Losing Effort Award

It seems like every week this award goes to whoever played the 49ers. This week's unfortunate honoree is Colts rookie quarterback Peyton Manning, who threw for three touchdowns and led the Colts to a 21-0 lead before Steve Young and reality caught up with Indianapolis. Manning did not add to his NFL-high 14 interceptions and hooked up with receiver Marvin Harrison on three scoring strikes, giving the top overall draft pick nine touchdown passes. He's not good enough to beat Young yet, but Manning showed Sunday why the Colts made him their top pick and their future. Stay tuned ...
