Week 11 Top Performers Posted: Monday November 16, 1998 11:55 PM
A lesson was learned in Week 11. Just like a book should never be judged by its cover, the average NFL game shouldn't be judged by its statistics. This week was big on numbers, but the numbers didn't always lead to a win. All major category leaders were losers, but that will soon become obvious. Onto to this week's honors...
Top Ground GainerThis guy's new to the scene, but he's hardly playing like a newcomer. Jacksonville's Fred Taylor had scored TDs in each of the last six games and led all rookies with 611 rushing yards. In case he hadn't been noticed, Taylor made sure people paid attention on Sunday. Against the Buccaneers Taylor was dominant, rushing for 128 yards on 20 carries. If his 6.4 yards per carry wasn't impressive enough, his three touchdowns were. Perhaps more convincing then his stats was when he amassed them. Taylor ran 70 yards for the winning touchdown with 2:40 remaining in the game to propel the Jaguars to a 29-24 victory. Offensive Outburst AwardIn most sports it is debatable who is the greatest at each position, but not in the NFL. And again on Sunday, San Francisco's Jerry Rice proved why he is the exception to the rule. The NFL's greatest wide receiver of all-time had a huge game against the Falcons. Despite the 49ers loss, Rice had 10 catches for 169 yards and a touchdown. The 65-yard score came late in the fourth quarter, as the 49ers tried to come back. Rice could have had an even bigger day, as he dropped a short touchdown pass from Steve Young just before halftime.
Losing Effort AwardDespite his team losing to Dallas for the 15th time in their last 16 meetings, Arizona's Jake Plummer had the biggest day of any quarterback this season. Plummer threw for a career-high 465 yards and three touchdowns. He was trying to bring the Cardinals back from an early 28-0 deficit, but came up short as the Cowboys won 35-28. The second-year quarterback had a favorite target, as wide receiver Frank Sanders caught a career-high 11 passes for 190 yards. Plummer found Rob Moore on a 57-yard pass play that brought the ball down to the Cowboys 4 in the final seconds. However, he couldn't finish off the brilliant performance, as he threw three incompletions to end the game, including a fade pass that was knocked out of Moore's hands to end the game. Plummer and the Cardinals passionately argued for pass interference on the final play to no avail. Plummer threw for more yards than any pro quarterback has at Sun Devil Stadium.
