Week 6 Panthers QB Beuerlein shoots down Seahawks
By B. Duane Cross, CNNSI.com ATLANTA -- With the St. Louis Rams enjoying a bye week, NFL quarterbacks took the torch and ran, er, passed with it. While New Orleans' Jeff Blake and Denver's Brian Griese were throwing for three touchdowns in their teams' victories, San Francisco quarterback Jeff Garcia threw for 321 yards and four TDs in the 49ers' 34-28 overtime loss to Oakland. Carolina's Steve Beuerlein -- under new offensive coordinator Richard Williamson -- was second among Sunday passers with 332 yards and two TDs in the Panthers' 26-3 victory against Seattle. The Seahawks second-year QB Brock Huard, making his first career start, did not fare as well: 19-for-34 for 172 yards. Oakland's Rich Gannon, who hooked up with Tim Brown -- who topped Sunday's receivers with 172 yards and two TDs -- for the game-winning score against the Niners, threw for 312 yards and two TDs. Two other QBs were valiant in defeat: Indianapolis' Peyton Manning, who lost for the third time at New England, completed 31 passes for 334 yards (Sunday's individual high) and one TD. Green Bay's Brett Favre threw for 293 yards and two scores, but had three picks and two fumbles in a failed comeback attempt against the Lions. However, posting big receiving yardage does not always guarantee victory: Three of the top four receiving yardage leaders from Sunday were on losing teams. Terrell Owens, fresh off his one-game suspension, hauled in 12 passes for 170 yards and two TDs in the 49ers' loss. The Colts' Marvin Harrison had 13 catches 159 yards and a score, while San Diego's Reggie Jones had seven receptions for 107 yards in the loss to Denver. As the day's top rushers proved, the surest way to victory is with a stout ground attack. Four of the top five rushers played on winning teams, including Tennessee's Eddie George, who had 181 yards and a TD against Cincinnati. Other big-number rushers Sunday were New Orleans' Ricky Williams, who had 128 yards and a TD against Chicago, while San Francisco's Charlie Garner scampered for 112 yards. Honorable mention: One player who cannot be overlooked -- even in a losing effort -- is Cleveland rookie running back Travis Prentice, who rushed for 97 yards and three TDs. Is it his fault the Browns' passing game is stuck in park?
