Week 10 Kansas City QB has game to remember ... or forgetUpdated: Tuesday November 07, 2000 2:19 AM
By B. Duane Cross, CNNSI.com It ranks as the fourth highest all-time passing yardage total in NFL history. In a loss. Kansas City quarterback Elvis Grbac torched the Oakland defense for 504 yards and 31 points Sunday. But the Raiders' offense lit up the Chiefs for 49 points. Grbac posted the Chiefs' single-game record for passing yards. In a win or loss. Grbac's previous best for passing yards was 382 at Miami in 1995. Still, the loss Sunday was his only concern. "It's very disappointing coming here and losing," Grbac said. "But things will happen in this league."
In a season where Cincinnati can complete two -- count 'em, two -- passes and win, it's cruel that Grbac could have one of the game's all-time best performances and still come up 18 points short. If there is any solace for Grbac and the Chiefs, the seven remaining opponents are a combined 21-44. Kansas City (5-4) is not out of the playoff picture, but the one thing the Chiefs cannot withstand is another 504-yard passing performance. In a loss. The Chiefs also had two of Sunday's top receivers: Derrick Alexander (139 yards) and Tony Gonzalez (134), the first tight end in league history to have four consecutive 100-yard receiving games.
