Back in the day, Minnesota was noted more for its defensive prowess.

That was then. This is now.

Today's "Purple People Eaters" -- offensive in their own right -- feast on opposing defenses, and Sunday was Exhibit A.

  • Daunte Culpepper: 22-of-29 passing, 357 yards, three touchdowns.

  • Robert Smith: 103 yards rushing, one TD; 70 yards receiving, one TD.

  • Cris Carter: eight receptions, 138 yards, one TD.

  • Randy Moss: five catches, 106 yards, one TD.

The end result was a convincing 31-17 victory against Carolina. The Vikings now are 9-2 and have a two-game lead in the NFC Central.

"They were as explosive as any team I've seen since I came to Carolina," Panthers head coach George Seifert said.

Carter also moved within seven receptions of becoming the second NFL player to catch 1,000 passes in his career (San Francisco's Jerry Rice, 1,259). Said Vikings head coach Dennis Green: "Cris Carter continues to be absolutely phenomenal."

Much like the Vikings' offensive arsenal.
