Barely Barry: The Lions' Barry Sanders has no TDs in seven games vs. the 49ers defense Rick Stewart/Allsport

Week 15 is the closest thing the NFL has to a living will -- for those unfortunate teams that have hung on the last few weeks, holding ever so tenuously to those last, slim hopes of postseason survival, it may be time to pull the plug and mercifully end their playoff chase.

We'll designate four games this week as last-gasp Kevorkian Bowls -- playoff longshots facing reality against playoff locks. The Falcons can finish off the Saints (6-7), the Jaguars host the Oilers (7-6), the 49ers get the barely-alive Lions (5-8), much as the Broncos face the Giants (5-8).

One game pits two bubble teams against each other -- the 7-6 Steelers and 6-7 Bucs meet in a game that all but eliminates one team from the postseason.

This week also starts a three-game stretch with major draft-day implications. The Colts and Bengals square off in a battle of 2-11 teams, then next week, the 2-11 Panthers (who, sorry, hand their pick to the Redskins) face the 3-10 Rams, and in the season finale, the Colts and Panthers meet, with the No. 2 pick in the 1999 draft likely on the line.

This week's gem is Sunday night's Jets-Dolphins showdown, with the 9-4 AFC East co-leaders setting the tone for the AFC playoffs in a game at ... where else? Pro Player Stadium hosts this, then next week's Broncos-Dolphins Game of the Millennia, then the Super Bowl next month. Beats the Marlins, anyway.
