Week 17 NFL Preview

Kent Graham and the Giants still have an outside chance to make the playoffs AP

This week's Sports Illustrated cover asks "What's the Best Sports Year Ever?" -- you can argue this for days and not get anything close to a consensus.

A slightly less meaningful question, but one that will be answered definitively with days to spare in 1998, is "What's the Highest-Scoring NFL Season Ever?" C'mon. You've been debating that one with friends, too.

Here's the lowdown, for anyone who thinks there isn't much on the line in Week 17. In 1998, NFL games have averaged 42.6 total points per game, which is the second-highest total ever, well within range of the all-time mark, 43.0 points per game, set in 1995. To set the mark, games this weekend would have to average just above 49 points a game, a distinct possibility after the Vikings put 50 points up on the Jaguars last week. Then again, there's the Eagles, averaging 10.2 points a game in '98.

But really, there's hope. Just last month, Week 13 games averaged 49.3 points. So there it is -- something for those of you who aren't somehow Cards, Giants or Buccaneers fans to root for this week. A touchdown here, an late field goal there, a special two-point conversion attempt to help the cause, and all the NFL's teams can put aside their differences (and, um, defenses) and help make football history.

Makes you forget all about that home run chase, doesn't it?
