By Rich Loup, CNNSI.com

After eight games, it's customary to match up a team's preseason expectations with its midseason record.

Forgive the Chicago Bears if they get nauseous looking at the carnage of their first half.

The Bears were supposed to be one of the NFC's up-and-coming teams. Instead, Chicago is 1-7 and, suddenly, going to a Bulls game seems to be more enticing to Windy City fans.

When analyzing Chicago's disastrous start, forget all the fancy stats and get to the two numbers that mean the most -- points scored and points allowed. The Bears are 29th in scoring offense (13.8 points per game) and 26th in scoring defense (25.3). This is a relatively new concept, but if you can't score and can't keep your opponents from scoring, you won't win many games.

Stats matchup
| Preview
